From the bleak lands of the painted to the soft coasts of the south, from the icy shores of Thule to the windswept beaches of Frankia, the Norsemenn are reviled in the darklands as murderers of women & children, pillagers & slavers without mercy, wild & savage killers that destroy almost everything they touch & take the rest for themselves. The fury of the northmen sweeps all before them, & yet the Norse, the Skilfing kingdom in particular, are not so barbaric - nor so different from other humans - as many would choose to believe. To live upon the cold edges of the world where the soil is poor, with the incalculable threat of gods & jtnar in the mountains around them, who is to say other men would not take to the seas to plunder & raid to feed their children? To the Norse, the weak are nothing, for their realm has taught them that only the strong & the ruthless survive, & their victims that see clearly understand that one day the strawhairs will not merely raid their coasts; they will surely take them & the lands beyond.
Gjll, the Vane-Bearer, brings the power of Thor from his Jarl's dragonship, his skei, into battle; an honour that is not lost upon his crew nor upon the wretched victims of the Thurs, what the enemies of the Norse call Trolls. Himself a mighty Warrior, already spoken of in the tales of Lindisfarena & of Ilkolmkill, Gjll is known from the lands of the painted to the soft southern coasts as a murderer of woman & child & beast, a terrible creature of what once was legend filled with a fury that is terrible to behold - but which Vrtun's skalds record for their sagas reverently. Gjll cares nothing for sagas, for poetry or verse, only the lust found in the kill & the favour of his Jarl, but mostly for the honour of bearing the lightning of Thor himself into battle; for the god of thunder & lightning & strength sees the Jtnar of Jtunheimr & especially the Thurs, who bear his name, as his children, & Gjll knows that the favour of the gods -- in these times of war & darkness -- are everything.
